To reliably manufacture hard disk drive (HDD) heads with proper performance, head manufacturers must be able to accurately measure etching dimensions. The required accuracy may be on the order of tenths of a micrometer or even smaller, necessitating nanometer-level detection of the positions of individual edges at the pole tip and etched steps.
Because the components are extremely small and maintaining the surface quality of the head is critical, measurements must be performed using highly precise, non-contact optical coordinate measuring microscopes.
